Seeing a Fuel Cell Bus Up Close and Personal

On September 26, Argonne National Laboratory employees had an opportunity to view first-hand the workings of a fuel-cell-powered bus and enjoy a ride around the Argonne site.

The stop was one of several for the bus, which Argonne brought to this area in collaboration with Northern Illinois University (NIU) and Georgetown University. NIU and Argonne are developing a comprehensive educational, outreach, and research program in the emerging area of hydrogen as the fuel of the future for transportation.

In the research area of this collaboration, NIU and Argonne are developing improved electrode materials and characterizing the durability of polymer electrolyte and solid oxide fuel cells. In the educational and outreach aspects, Argonne has hosted and trained three masters-degree students in the fabrication and analysis of fuel cells and fuel cell materials, and has provided a series of lectures for fuel cell-related courses at NIU.
